The Center for Health Policy, in conjunction
with academic and state agencies from both Missouri and Kansas, hosted
the 2nd Annual Achieving Health Equity conference April 17 and 18,
2007. The conference was held at the Kaufmann Foundation in Kansas
City, Missouri.
The conference’s theme, Achieving Health
Equity: Ensuring Access to Care, was reflected by range of topics discussed,
revolving around the uninsured and underinsured issues facing racial
and ethnic minorities. The event’s national keynote speakers

Break out sessions were offered once each day and included panelists
and providers involved in best practices in both Kansas and Missouri.
Mental health was a focus of two sessions: family violence; and the
use of jails, courts and homeless shelters as unofficial mental health
providers. In addition, other sessions included the topics of serving
undocumented populations, legislative initiatives devoted to health
care access, health care provider education on diversity and cultural
competency, school-based initiatives, prenatal and perinatal care,
tobacco prevention, and chronic disease management – specifically,
diabetes.
To conclude the second day of the conference,
health care leaders from the Kansas City area assembled to answers
questions from the conference participants. Deans and professors from
local schools of medicine and nursing, as well as hospital CEOs and
presidents came together to answer what their respective institutions
are doing to bridge the gaps in the health care system. Nick Haines,
of KCPT-19, served
as moderator.
